2007, probably the hottest year ever

January 15, 2007

According to the British Meteorological Office, there is a 60% chance that 2007 will be the hottest year in history. That would meen breaking the record that was set in 1998. The reason for this hot year is the El Nino, and while it isn't as powerfull as it was in 1997 and 1998, it still might be enough to break the record.

The El Nino is a major temperature fluctuation in the waters of the East Pacific Ocean. In September 2006 the El Nino appeared again, and it still continues now, in the beggining of 2007. While the El Nino has been a phenomenon that took place regularly in the last 300 years, only in our century did it become a real problem due to the increased industry activity. And it's not just about temperature. The El Nino can also bring typhoons in areas like Philippines or drought in Africa or Australia.
